Finding Home: A Personal Journey, Part 2

The girls and I settled into a "routine" at my mom's house rather quickly, much to my delight. It wasn't without some kinks and bumps but it seemed to be working rather nicely. After the first couple of days of settling in, I got the itch to get out and see my old stomping grounds. I wanted to see how much had changed and how much had stayed exactly as pictured in my memory.

A lot had changed. New shopping malls, new restaurants, new churches, homes and schools seemed to have sprung up everywhere. Still, amidst all the changes, the places that I was interested in seeing had stayed the same.

As we meandered through Palm Bay and Melbourne in my mom's Hyundai Sonata, I found myself reliving memories in my head as we passed landmarks, parks, churches and schools that each held specific memories of my childhood and teenage years. There was Fred Lee park where I used to ride my bike and Covenant Presbyterian Church where I first accepted Jesus into my heart at the age of 9 and where I later re-affirmed my faith at the age of 15. There was Brevard Community College where I spent the majority of my junior and senior years of high school and the Chick-Fil-A where I held my first job. There was the Chili's that my friends and I used to hang out at after youth group and the TJ Maxx where I did most of my shopping.

We turned onto one of the main roads in Melbourne and headed into downtown. I begged my mom to stop at The Sun Shoppe. It was (is) my all time favorite coffee shop! It has an artsy vibe with it's wall displays of iron work and contemporary pop art. The people who work behind the counter are almost always wearing some really creative get up complete with a piercing of some sort and there is usually some kind of live music on the weekends. I remember coming here on Sunday nights with a few friends, sitting on the couches and just talking. Talking about everything and nothing at all. Sipping my Vanilla Chai Tea Latte in a ginormous ceramic mug and soaking up the atmosphere. I loved it there. It was my escape.

Right next door is a paint-your-own-pottery place and I spent many an afternoon there with my mom or a close friend or both painting tea pots and coffee mugs and plates. We went so much that the owner eventually knew us by name.

As I sipped my steaming Vanilla Chai Tea Latte in a to-go cup, we headed across the causeway towards beachside. As we came up on A1A, I noticed the surf shops I used to walk in and browse, knowing that there was no way in you know where that I was EVER going to pay that much for a bathing suit, but enjoying the browsing just the same. I saw a big "Reef" sticker in the window and I remembered my first pair of Reefs. Best flip-flops ever, just so you know.

As we kept driving along A1A we passed all the beach parks that I used to frequent with my friends. Mostly Anna...who is now my sister-in-law:)

Pelican Beach Park

And then we came to Dakine Diegos.

My Favorite Burrito Shack

Dakine Diegos is a small, eclectic burrito shack in Satellite Beach, FL and the burritos there are out of this world yummy!

It's super laid back and you'll find barefoot surfers next to men in military uniforms on lunch break from Patrick AFB on any given day.

People are encouraged to sign the walls when they visit and the various signatures have become such an integral part of the atmosphere there.

The burritos are HUGE and filled with jasmine rice and black beans along with all sorts of other yummy stuff, including pineapple if you so desire.

If you're ever in the area, I highly recommend it!

As the daylight faded and the breeze got cool, we piled back into my mom's car and headed home. Once again, I found myself gazing out the window at the all to familiar but eerily different scenery. These places that held so many memories, both good and bad were etched so deeply into my soul that I could remember the way things smelled or the color shirt someone was wearing on a particular night spent at that particular place. And I felt a connection.

I have memories in Florida. BIG memories. It's where I came to know my Savior and it's where I fell in love for the first time. It's also where I experienced my first and only real heartbreak. It's where I learned more about who I was and what the Lord was calling me toward. It's where I realized that my family is a precious gift and to love them is a privilege. It's where I grew in my faith and where I stumbled drastically. It's where I said a cuss word in front of my entire youth group on accident and where I laughed so hard that coke flew out of my nose on the curb at Twisty Cone. It's where I made unlikely friends and where I figured out that the likely friends weren't always the best kind. It's where I grew in my confidence to be obedient to God even when people I loved and respected didn't understand. It's where I learned independence.

Moral of Part 2 of my personal journey: Home is where your Memory Lane is.

Tomorrow, the conclusion of my journey.

Finding Home: A Personal Journey, Part 1

Growing up in the military, we moved around a lot. Not as much as some military families, mind you but still more than the average civilian family, I'd say. Here, I'll explain:

I was born in Little Rock, Arkansas.
When I was 3, we moved to Hawaii.
When I was 6, we moved to Florida.
When I was 9, we moved to Georgia.
When I was 15, we moved back to Florida.
When I was 18, I moved back to Arkansas, sans family.
When I was 19, I moved back to Florida.
When I was 20, I joined the military and have since lived in Texas, California, back to Texas, Hawaii and now Maryland.

That's a lot of moving, wouldn't you say? Still, it's the only life I knew and it's a life that I have appreciated for the most part. The only times that I've had any issue reconciling this life within myself is when someone asks me, "so, where are you from?"

This question has always baffled me. "From?" I'll reply. And then I give the standard, "Oh, I'm a military brat so we moved around a lot." Most people's interest is immediately sparked by this answer and then I get the questions like, "did you live any cool places?" or "Was your dad gone a lot?" And yes, it is fun to tell them how I lived in Hawaii or how my dad worked closely with the Space Shuttle operations on Florida's Space Coast, and that is where my family had remained since my Dad's retirement from the Air Force. But when those conversations come to a close, I have always walked away with that one word haunting me..."from"..."home."

For some reason, my recent trip down to Florida changed everything for me. It was a two week journey that I had no idea I was even on until I came to the conclusion of it.

It all started when I got off the plane at the Orlando airport. I had left Baltimore where it was 30 degrees outside, and 2 hours later, I was in central Florida where it was a perfect 65 degrees. The breeze was warm, the palm trees were swaying and the bright Florida sun greeted me like soft kisses on my face. And it was then that it hit me, I really missed Florida.

Then my mom showed up with her sparkly, kind eyes and her always cheery disposition. I hugged her tight and it hit me again, I really missed my mom. My mom lives in Florida.

We made the one hour drive down to Palm Bay where my my mom and sister have recently moved into a little home in a Oak tree filled neighborhood that I had never been to. But when I stepped into that home for the first time, it felt familiar; As if I'd been there before.

It felt as though I'd lived there all of my life. Why? Well, I'll show you why...

Mom Playing the Piano

It was walking in to find all of the things that have been in every house I've ever lived in as a child. It was finding the pottery I made for my mom in second grade on a shelf, displayed with all of her other prized possessions. It was my Gramino's paintings hidden all throughout the house, or the dozens of albums filled with pictures of people who've loved me my whole life. It was seeing all of the trinkets and knick knacks my parents have collected over years of PCS's and TDY's. It was listening to my mom play the piano in the evenings. It was comfortable, familiar, almost homey.

So, the first part of this personal journey for me started with this simple and age-old adage: Home is where the Heart Is.

Up from the Dead She Arose...

Okay, okay so I haven't been dead...just preoccupied. There is a big change happening for our family at the current time but it's temporary and might even be good in some ways. I have been asked by my hubby not to share the details on this blog but I promise you, when the change is over, I will tell you.

With that said, there will be no more talk of it for the time being! Life goes on an we have to find a "new normal." I'm in the process of figuring out what my "new normal" is actually going to look like and I don't mind it a bit. Growing up in a military family and then going into the military myself and now being married to the military, I've learned to see change as a welcomed opportunity to start fresh and set some goals! I like goals.

But I'll talk more about that in later blogs. First things first, catch up! I have SO much to catch up on, it's ridiculous. So, here's what I'm thinking...I'll give you a quick run down of our February and then tomorrow, I'll start filling you in on my two week vacation to Florida! Sound good? Good. Let's begin...

First, we had two blizzards back to back. I know I blogged a bit about that before, so I won't talk about it again, but I do have some cool pictures I took of the icicles on our porch afterward.

Prayers are appreciated :)

Emerald City Dreaming

Last week was my friend's daughter's 3rd birthday. Did I say that right? Sounded weird? Whatever...

Anyway, Becca (my friend) asked me to help her make a Wizard of Oz birthday cake as Eden (the birthday girl) is obsessed with all things Wizard of Oz. She's 3 and she'd take Dorothy over a Disney princess any day! It's refreshing actually. I really love that about little Eden.

Anyway, having never decorated an actual CAKE before (I tend to stick to smaller confections) I did my best to re-channel all of those Food Network challenges I've seen time and time again and Becca did some research online to find the perfect cake to replicate.

After about a week of research and pre-making about a million fondant poppy flowers, this was our end result...

Not bad, huh?

And I have to admit, I had some help. Becca did the baking, my friend Michelle has an eye for placement so she came over to help us figure out where everything should go on the cake and well, I had the cutest little assistant when it came to making the fondant decorations...

Ain't she cute? Poor thing. Worked to exhaustion. We don't play around at the Cortez house when it comes to fondant. We just don't.

Snowed In

Yes. We are. The snow began late Friday morning and did not stop until Saturday evening. We were under a blizzard warning all day long. When it finally ceased, there were over 30 inches of snow in our yard. 30. Yeah.

Oh! And...and...we had no power. All day on Saturday. Our house got down to 53 degrees! It was cold.

Needless to say, I have not left my house since Thursday evening, minus a quick run to CVS for necessities like paper plates and laundry detergent.

OH! And...and...we are expecting another 12-20 inches tonight! Yay for us **rolls eyes**.

And I have to admit, I've always had a Loralei Gilmore attitude when it comes to snow. I've always had a special place in my heart for the way it floats from the sky and sticks to your eyelashes. I love the smell of fresh snow in the atmosphere and how rosy your cheeks become after playing in it. It's clean and new and pretty and cleansing.

But much like Loralei, my love affair with snow is becoming tainted. For as pretty as it is when it's falling from the sky, the day after it snows, once the plowers have come through and there are 10 sedans stuck on the road shoulders, the bloom rubs off. Snow becomes dirty. And dangerous. And well, it keeps you in one place for far too long. The fact of the matter is, as much as I love snow...I don't always like it.

That being said, the family and I have found some great ways to entertain ourselves through all of this snow.

A day Snowed In

And snow is...well...pretty. Before the plowers come through and the cars get stuck anyway.

So, don't laugh too hard at me when I tell you, that in some small way, way back in the dark corners of my heart, I'm a slightly looking forward to another soft snowfall tonight. What can I say? My relationship with snow is complex like that.

Elliana = Eva and Isabela

Baby woman, tiny in stature now
But your heart is a treasure
Little princess come follow behind me now
I am reaching for you

Isabela

Elliana, God has answered my prayers
Elliana, God will conquer my fears
To mother a daughter, to look you in the eye
To know that I had everything, to walk with you in life
To give you to Jesus that He would impart
The wisdom that I'm longing for to mother your heart
Elliana, God has answered my prayers

Eva

There will be others to lead and to guide you girl
But only one you'll call Mother, the honor is all mine
To show you what a woman's like
I'm so glad you're mine

Isabela

Elliana, God has answered my prayers
Elliana, God will conquer my fears
To mother a daughter, to look you in the eye
To know that I had everything, to walk with you in life
To give you to Jesus that He would impart
The wisdom that I'm longing for to mother your heart
Elliana, God has answered my prayers

Eva

Tenderness of God is twirling around
In our living room tonight
Lighten up your daddy's eyes
And know that he just wants to freeze you in time

Eva

Elliana, God has answered my prayers
Elliana, God will conquer my fears
To mother a daughter, to look you in the eye
To know that I had everything, to walk with you in life
To give you to Jesus that He would impart
